Pretoria is the administrative capital city of South Africa.  Its streets are lined by Jacaranda trees, hence it is often referred to as the Jacaranda City.  Home to many embassies, consulates and many educational institutions. Some of the attractions you will see in this tour are:

* Melrose House – a high Victorian national monument housing the table with signatures of negotiators who signed to end the second Anglo-Boer war in 1902 that gave birth to The Union of South Africa.

* The Voortrekker Monument and Museum – This tribute to the ideals at the height of apartheid remains.  It took 12 years to build and was completed in 1949. The monument was built to honour the Voortrekkers, Boer families who rejected British rule in the Cape and in 1835–1838 trekked into the hinterland to found their own nation. A marble frieze in the Hall of Heroes traces their momentous Great Trek, culminating in the Battle of Blood River where a big Zulu army was defeated by a small force of the Boers.

* Kruger House – Transvaal Presidential residence of Paul Kruger from 1883 to 1902.

Union Building* Church Square – Paul Kruger’s statue surrounded by sentries, dominates this square. The square is flanked by some of the city’s historic buildings.

* Union Buildings – home to the administrative government and a symbol of the unity reached by Boers and the British after the second Anglo-Boer War.  Extensive formal gardens step down the hillside in terraces, dotted with war memorials and former prime ministers’ statues. The Union Buildings were designed by Sir Herbert Baker, who also designed many major buildings throughout South Africa.
